Beside live corners feature in InDesign CS5 which allows us to set roundness of all corners or for each corner separately there are and some very cool built in corner effects like Fancy, Bevel…
Let’s start with live corners. Just to mention that I am using free InDesign template Calipso which you can download from here. When you have rectangle or square shape, path or frame in your document click on it and yellow square will appear near right top corner. In case you do not see yellow square go to View > Extras > Show Live Corners to enable live corners feature. From the same menu you can hide live corners. Note: you can not apply corner effect to the smooth path (shape, frame).
After clicking yellow square you will see 4 diamonds appears on the selected frame or shape (you can convert any shape to frame). To set corner radius click on any diamond and drag. While dragging pop-up will appear and show you amount of corner radius (R=17 mm for example).
To set different radius for each corner, hold down Shift then click diamond and drag.
To cycle through different built in corner effects hold down Alt key and click diamond. You can change individual corners and after applying built in corner effects. Hold down Shift, click and drag diamond. To exit click anywhere outside of frame.
Corner effects are available from Object menu. First select object using Selection tool then go to Object > Corner Options. Corner Options dialog will appear. In the middle of dialog is chain icon. Click (Make all settings the same – chain icon) to set the same corner effect for all corners then choose effect from drop-down list on the right side. If you want different corner effect for each corner click chain again (broken chain icon will appear) and set effect for each corner separately. Turn on Preview to see instantly corner effects.
Same dialog is available from options bar below menus. With frame or shape selected hold down Alt key and click square with 4 blue dots to open Corner Options dialog.
In case you want to remove corner effects first ensure Make all settings the same have normal chain icon (not broken) then choose None from any drop – down list on the right side of corner.
Actually you can apply built-in corner effects from options bar without opening any dialog but this method works only to apply same for all corners, you can not set different effect for each corner independently. To save time if you want same effect for multiple objects, select them all then apply corner effect.
When you have other non-smooth paths like pentagon, hexagon yellow square will not appear when you select path but you can still apply corner effect to the path (shape, frame). Select path using Selection tool then open Corner Options dialog from Object > Corner Options. In this case you must apply same corner effect to all corners, different effect for each corner won’t be available (grayed out).

Purple background in screenshots is due to substituted font, watch video below to learn more and how to deal with composition highlighting.
